Career Opportunities with Graduate Schemes

After years of hard work studying at university, the next step is to land a great job. For many, the arduous task of sending in applications is never-ending, while others may choose instead, to take a graduate scheme.

What is a graduate scheme? It is a type of work-placement programme specially designed for graduates that gives them the chance to land a job straight after leaving university. Competition in this field is fierce, because employment opportunities are quite rare and valuable.

Just like the usual employment application process, anyone entering the graduate scheme undergoes interviews and exams in order to qualify for the position. The company offering the graduate scheme matches the applicant’s skills and specialisation. It provides stability, direction and an opportunity to become successful in the chosen career.

The company offers graduates a premium post in an established business. In return, the successful graduate must contribute his abilities and creativity toward achieving the goals of the company.

Graduate schemes usually last for one year, enough time for an individual to create a strong career foundation in the company, as well as obtain a wide practical understanding of how it functions. In these schemes, the graduate will often be assigned to different departments in order to get a feel for how the various departments within the company operate. In addition, this rotation provides graduates with a chance to explore their skills and decide which department they are most suited for.

One downside to graduate schemes is the low wage on offer. Anyone who works in a graduate scheme receives less than regular employees do. Nonetheless, this can provide them with a very rich learning experience and a solid foundation for their future careers.
